Wandering Taxi Finds a Home - At the Airport

Yellow Taxi Found at the Airport

Remember this taxi, that looks like a repainted ambulance?

I had been wondering which set it belongs to. I couldn't find it and couldn't find it....

Then today I looked (with the help of Google) once more and spied it in a European eBay auction. It's part of a Kohl's exclusive set called High Flyin' Airport and Vehicles, set N9989.

I had known of the existence of set N9989 but wasn't sure of its components, other than the airport. I had thought this car was an emergency vehicle, not a taxi.

Now I can sleep at night.

GeoTrax Easter Gift Sets from Target

Easter Gift Sets - My Latest GeoTrax Discovery

Will it never end? Of course it will. It has to, since GeoTrax have been discontinued.

What I'm talking about is the fact that every few weeks or so I discover a new (to me) GeoTrax set that wasn't on my checklist or website yet.

Today it's two Easter Gift Sets from Target.

What's Included in an Easter Gift Set?

Each of the sets has an evergreen tree, a deciduous tree, some curved track, a DVD, and a small push "train" with an accompanying minifig.

Set P6360, which I'm calling Easter Gift Set #1, has 2 large curved elevation rail track pieces. The push vehicle is the first release of Woohoo and Opie.

Set P6361, Easter Gift Set #2, probably has the same track, but I couldn't confirm if there are two pieces or only one. (Can you?) Two would make more sense, since that would give you a complete circle. The push vehicle is Sally with Chatty and Chirpy.

The trees are the same in each set, and I think the DVD is too.

If you have more information about either of these sets, or any others I have yet to find, drop me a line. I'll give you public credit (if you like) for the "discovery".

Correction on 2007 Lead Paint Recall

Watch for Red Engine with Yellow Trim

I just discovered that the mostly red and white GeoTrax train engine, part of Special Track Pack set K3013, that was recalled for lead paint violations in 2007 is not quite the one I thought it was.

The recalled engine had yellow trim for the ladders and (what I think are) horns on top of the cab. Those horns may be lights. My apologies to those who know more about them than I.

A similar engine (set H5705) was also produced that has silver paint in those spots instead of the yellow. This engine is just fine.

You can see pictures of each here at GeoTrax Packs.

I wish I hadn't mistakenly thrown away several engines that I thought were the recalled ones. Oh well, live and learn.

Can You Help Identify These GeoTrax Pieces?

Three Mystery GeoTrax Pieces Evade Identification

I have the three GeoTrax items shown above - a fireman dressed mostly in yellow, a fire engine painted mostly white, and an ambulance disguised as a yellow taxi.

I haven't been able to determine which sets these originally belonged to. It's possible that the fireman and the fire engine were both part of the same set. There are no product IDs on either of them. The taxi is labeled L6374 on the bottom which is the identifier for the 2007 set called Ambulance with Stat and Stewart.

Do you own any of these pieces? If so, do you know for sure which sets they were originally part of? Having the original packaging would help a lot. I haven't found a box online that shows any of these.

Here are close-up shots of each of them.

If you have any information on any of these pieces, I would appreciate your letting me know. You can use this Contact Form or the comment section below to get in touch with me. I'll give a free copy of my GeoTrax Compendium and Checklist to the first person(s) who can positively identify each (that is, any one) of them.

Thanks!

UPDATE: After acquiring a total of 3 of the fire engines, I decided to try asking Fisher-Price about them. I'm not sure why I didn't think of this earlier. According to their information, the fire engine and fireman were a bonus that came with the Grand Central Station in 2007. The set was sold as M4686 exclusively at Walmart.

I think I'll ask next about the taxi and will update this if needed.

GeoTrax Packs Store Is Another Place to Buy GeoTrax Trains

GeoTrax Packs Store Now Open for Business

I recently decided I had enough surplus material - GeoTrax sets and pieces - to start offering them for sale on GeoTraxPacks.com. So I did a little research to see if the WordPress plugin called WooCommerce was still the best storefront available. The reviews claimed it still was at the top of the heap, so I installed it and started adding GeoTrax sets to it.

You can now buy a fair number of GeoTrax sets (securely, of course) directly from GeoTrax Packs, if you have (or create) a PayPal account and a shipping address in the United States. Sorry, I'm not prepared to sell outside the US at this time. The shipping costs would be prohibitive.

Why Should I Buy Directly from GeoTrax Packs?

The main reason to buy GeoTrax directly from GeoTraxPacks.com is the cost. Other sites, like eBay and Amazon, charge a fee for every sale. That's how they make their profit, and that's fine. Since I don't charge fees to myself, I can offer sets for less and still make a profit for myself.

I'm starting with complete and nearly complete sets in the store. Eventually I'll add smaller bits and pieces such as those currently found in the spreadsheet at the bottom of the For Sale page.

In the future I'll probably also discount some items. While it's possible to do that on the other sale sites, it feels like it will be easier to do so on my own site.

Should the unthinkable happen and I have my accounts closed at those other sites (as I know has happened without warning to other sellers), I'll still be able to offer these great toys to you on GeoTrax Packs.

I hope you can find what you need and want at the store. As always, let me know if there's something in particular that you're looking for and can't find. I may have one or be able to get one for you.

GeoTrax Layout Galleries Page Created at GeoTrax Packs

Now You Can See Pictures of GeoTrax Layouts

Many of you GeoTrax fans have visited GeoTraxPacks.com looking for track layout ideas. I've always had a page there that discusses track layouts. It pointed you to other sources of layouts, such as Bing, but it never showed you any layouts right on the site itself, unless you include what is visible in most of the pictures of starter sets.

That just changed today. I now have a gallery of layouts that I setup myself right on GeoTrax Packs. There's only one set of pictures posted there so far, but I plan to add more (complex) layouts in the near future.

So check out the GeoTrax Layout Galleries page now and return there in the next few days to see what I've added.

GeoTrax Videos Show How To Use the Trains

GeoTrax Videos Are in the Works

I've started creating the videos that highlight the moving parts of each GeoTrax set that I have access to. As of this writing, I have nine of them done.

I decided to group them into playlists with five videos in each list. The first list contains these sets.

  • Tracktown Railway
  • Mt. Blast Construction Co.
  • Fast Response Rescue Co.
  • Crosstown Express
  • Load 'em Up Gravel Co.

When finished, the second list will include these sets.

  • Whirly Bird Rescue
  • Big Falls Wrecking
  • Mix 'n Go Work Crew
  • Rapid Rescue Fire Squad
  • Cross Valley Junction

There are some sets that sadly don't deserve their own video. A set like Freightway Transport, which is just a truck cab and a trailer, doesn't have any special moving parts. A video of me pushing it around the track would be a waste of time. Sets that consist of only track pieces fall into this category too.

Thusfar, I've been able to finish several videos each day. If I can continue at this pace, I should have them done in a month or two. I have over 100 more videos I can add!

GeoTrax Videos - My Next Big Project

Creating Videos of GeoTrax Sets in Action, But First...

As you may already know (or have guessed), I have a lot of GeoTrax sets. They reside in various rooms of my home mostly on shelves I've purchased just for this purpose. Some are simply in stacks of boxes on the floor.

All of these sets were fairly well organized but not quite as well as I wanted them to be. So right now I'm in the middle of reorganizing them, so I can find what I need more easily and quickly. I should be finished with this task soon - hopefully by the end of this week.

When I'm done with the reorg, I plan to create some GeoTrax videos.

One GeoTrax Set, One GeoTrax Video

Still photographs, such as those currently on GeoTrax Packs, are wonderful for showing the pieces you get in each set. However, they don't give you a sense of all the fun you can have with them.

So here's what I intend to do: I want to make a short video for each GeoTrax set (that I own) showing what you can do with it.

Some of the larger (usually starter sets) have many moving parts. Sometimes you can use the train to activate a building. Normally you can manually make such actions happen too.

Some sets have remote controllers that make trains (and other types of vehicles) move and make sounds.

Some of the smaller sets have pieces you control by hand only. Though these may seem unimportant to you at first, your child probably will disagree. Sometimes all a child wants is a simple toy. (Clanging pots and pans, anyone?)

This will probably take weeks, if not months, to complete all the videos that I have in mind right now. Watch for the first of them in the next two or three weeks. I'll be posting them on YouTube and linking to them from GeoTrax Packs.

GeoTrax Compendium and Checklist Now Available

The Compendium and Checklist Is Here!

I finally decided to release the first version of my GeoTrax Compendium and Checklist. It's as ready for "prime time" as Version 1 is going to be.

I don't think there are any outright errors in it, other than those that are due to lack of verifiable information. So you should be able to trust at least 99% of the data you see there.

UPDATE: I did find a few small mistakes. They'll be corrected in the next version.

I am charging a small fee ($4.95) for access to it. I'm considering making this a one-time fee; that is, if you buy the current version, all future versions would be free. We'll see about that later though. If you buy a copy, you probably won't really need a future version.

You can purchase your copy here at GeoTrax Packs. You can see a sample page there too. Enjoy!

GeoTrax Online Games at the Fisher Price Site

Choose GeoTrax Engine Builder or Memory Match

I'm not sure how long ago Fisher Price decided to put a couple of GeoTrax games online, but they're still there as of this writing. There is a GeoTrax Engine Builder game and a GeoTrax Memory Match game.

Engine Builder

The Engine Builder game is really an online jigsaw puzzle rather than a (board) game. You can choose from three levels of difficulty. The Easy level is recommended for children aged 3-5 years. Medium is for 4-7 year olds, and Hard for 5-9.

You pick one of six engines - Aero, Woohoo, Goggles, Bull, Steamer, or Ironface - and then select the difficulty level. (Until I discovered this game, I thought Goggles was the engineer and Bunsen was the train engine. I was wrong.)

As far as I can tell, there is no difference between working on an Easy puzzle and a Medium one. Both have the same number of pieces each of which is outlined for you in the destination area. What makes a Hard level puzzle different is that the pieces are not outlined; the number of pieces remains the same.

Memory Match

The Memory Match game is a "concentration" style game with three distinct levels - again, Easy, Medium, and Hard. Each level is timed, so you can see how you improve over several plays.

The Easy level presents you with just two pairs of "face down" tiles. In each game (at every level), you click one tile to reveal a train. Then you click another tile to see if it matches your first one. If it does, the tiles disappear. When you have revealed all the matches, you get to see your time spent.

The Medium level gives you eight tiles, and the Hard level gives you twelve. The Hard level of the Memory Match game is the most difficult of all of these games.

If you think your child would enjoy these fairly simply online challenges, give them a try. They're harmless and - who knows? - may not be available forever.

Where to Buy GeoTrax Trains

Where Do You Find GeoTrax Today?

Since Fisher Price discontinued the production of GeoTrax back in 2011, they have obviously become impossible to find in brick and mortar stores such as Toys R Us, Kohl's, and so on. For a time, you probably could have found some sets as remaining stock in these places, but eventually these boxes were bought up too. So where do you go now to find GeoTrax that were relatively easy to get for nearly a decade?

There are two main sources of GeoTrax today and several other lesser known places you can look. All of them are online where you can sometimes still find "new in box" (NIB) sets but more likely will see second hand (or third or fourth...) pieces, sets, and lots.

The two chief sources are Amazon and eBay. I am aware of at least three other sites that usually carry some GeoTrax items supplied by third party sellers - OnlineAuctions, UniSquare, and Sears. If you really scour the Web, you may be able to find even more sites that sell them. If you do, you might post a comment below letting us all know about your discovery.

There is actually one more site I know of where you can sometimes find GeoTrax. It's Craigslist. The reason I didn't group it with the other sites above is that your searches there are obviously regional and are very hit and miss.

What GeoTrax Can I Expect to Find at Amazon and eBay?

Let's look at Amazon first.

In general, sellers tend to offer more complete sets on Amazon. This is a function of the way Amazon is structured. You need to have a UPC (or EAN) in order to list an item for sale there. An individual piece of GeoTrax hardware, like a train engine or a curved piece of track, doesn't have a UPC. On the other hand, a complete set does.

That said, not all listings on Amazon are for complete sets. You will want to read the description carefully to see exactly what is for sale. Usually just a piece or two from a larger set will be missing. Smaller sets are likely to have every piece accounted for.

Prices on Amazon tend to be somewhat higher (at least, for GeoTrax) than on other sites. Part of this relates to the completeness mentioned above. In addition, sellers are aware that buyers may be using Amazon bucks that they have gotten as a gift or by some other free method, so they are likely to have more to spend and are more willing to spend it. There are also people who do virtually all their shopping on Amazon simply for the convenience and are willing to pay more as a consequence.

Now let's look at eBay.

Some have compared eBay to a yard sale (rummage sale, garage sale). It's place where you can find pretty much anything, including what other people consider junk.

GeoTrax sets and pieces are certainly not junk, but you can often find what you're looking for at a lower cost than on Amazon. You can also usually find that one missing piece (at a premium, yes) to replace the one that got lost or accidentally got thrown away.

I hesitate to say that you'll need to replace a broken piece because, in my many dealings with GeoTrax, I can probably count on one hand the number of items I've seen that actually were broken. (This doesn't include remote controlled trains that no longer run, because they still work fine as push trains.)

On eBay, you can also find combinations of sets which are sometimes discounted compared to the cost of individual sets. Once in a while you'll also see "sets" that aren't really sets but are mismatched pieces put together by someone who wasn't sure anymore what constituted the original set.

You can see what was originally included in many GeoTrax sets at GeoTraxPacks.com.

What about Those Other Sites? What GeoTrax Do They Have?

Smaller sites like OnlineAuctions, UniSquare, and others most often will have fewer offerings than the big two. However, you may be able to find some deals there that either aren't offered elsewhere or are priced lower.

The format of these sites tends to be more like eBay than Amazon. This is so sellers can list items without the UPC requirement and can generally post anything they want (within site restrictions, of course).

If you can find a GeoTrax set for less on these sites, it's probably not because the quality is lower but rather because of the fee structure setup by the site's owners. Many smaller sites charge sellers lower (even zero) fees than eBay. Since sellers are allowed to keep more of the profit, they can reduce their prices and still get the amounts they want.

Also similar to eBay, you may find parts and pieces on these smaller sites too, though these may be fewer and farther between than on eBay simply because the seller knows his audience is larger there.

How Long Will the Supply Last?

As I hinted at above, GeoTrax pieces - vehicles, buildings, track, etc. - are really, really sturdy. Pieces produced in 2003 (the debut year for GeoTrax) are still in circulation today (2015) and should be for many, many years to come. Pieces produced near the end of the run in 2011 are today just four years old. They'll last even longer.

I personally expect the supply of GeoTrax to diminish more from carelessness - throwing them out in the trash - than from misuse or neglect.

Something else that I expect to happen though too is that the cost of a given set will continue to rise. This will not necessarily be to a decreasing supply but from a steady demand and from the (perhaps misguided) notion that older toys are more valuable.

If you're in the market for GeoTrax, my recommendation is to get what you want sooner than later.
